There is no doubt that these are moneymakers and for most it is a waste of time and money.Yet, they can be helpful I think if you attend the right one. 1)Have a realistic assessment of you skills and their ability to translate at the next level (difficult for most). 2)Is your level of play consistent with the ability needed for the schools attending? 3)Do you have interest in attending any of the schools that will be there?(this is very important). 4)If you have a narrow list of schools that you would like to attend, do they offer their own showcase/camp? (if so that maybe a better investment) 5)Follow up your camp with an email/letter telling the coach your interest and where you will be playing this summer in tournaments or league play. 6)Place education first when choosing a school.

Sending emails to schools of interest is a good way for your kid to introduce himself and keep the coach/school apprised of his progress, game schedule, etc. Just ensure that the email is sent from your kids email, not yours. Coaches like kids who can take the initiative and are mature enough to possess effective communication skills. Coaches do not want to talk with parents.

Most of the showcases are just that, moneymakers for travel organizations. However attending a couple, to educate yourself on the process, is not a bad idea. There are a lot of schools out there that looking to give money to ball players. I attended one @ Adelphi and another in Dix Hills. At Adelphi there were over 300 kids and only about 15 scouts. In Dix Hills there were only 25 kids and there were 20 scouts. I was able to stand right next to the scouts, for the whole showcase, and listen to them talk. One thing that stood out to me was that I heard them saying, time and time again, that they don't even bother going to the big showcases and prefer the smaller more intimate ones. They also frown upon the high dollar ones as well. If your son has talent you might want to check this guy out:
