dont know if this is the proper place for this yet but I just want some opinions on a situation with recruiting.
If any of you went through this before with a son or are going through it now with your rising senior please comment. Everyone else is free to comment but it might not be that relevant to you yet and you might not know the anxiety of the situations. Until you are actually in it its hard to imagine.
After years of little league, training, travel ball and doing the whole tournament circuit in the south we finally have offers on the table. A few are at the same time but one still hasnt made an offer.
What would you do in the following situation:
All of the schools are in the Ga/NC/SC area.
School A, D-1 (low level) is offering the basic 25%minimum baseball money and an additional 50-75 percent academic. Low level means the team is rebuilding and there is a really good chance to play early. Good facilities and a good academic environment. Its in a good conference and will play against some of the best schools in the south for their midweek games. Coach said "the offer is there until you tell us no" Can this be trusted? Does it mean we can still shop around safely without losing the spot?
School B, D-2 (mid level) is offering a package up to about 65 percent total with a mix of money. D2 doesnt have as many scholarships to divide up. Good academics and brand new facilities. The team has a coach who has good connections, training, etc, because he just came from a big D1 school (ACC). The offer will be available for 10 days and then "maybe" offered to someone else. The coach has traveled many many miles to see him play in the past.
School C, D-2 (low level) is offering the same as school B but the academics are ASTOUNDING. There is a good mix of players from many areas of the country and overall this degree will look the best on the wall. The offer is there till he tells them "no"
School D, D-1 (mid level) but up and coming. Alot of contact but the offer still hasn't come. They have the best campus of any I have seen. He's being told that it may be a few more weeks until an offer. To me the translation in that is that they have other guys they are trying to pursue first. Good academics but a great conference for league games and weekday games. Could the continuous contact without an offer be a carrot to dangle? How long should this be pursued before giving up?
I guess the danger in accepting an offer this early is that other options can open up later this fall and even in the spring. Accepting an offer early takes the pressure off and lets the kid enjoy his senior year.
I know its the kid's decision in general but I guess I'm looking for experience of other guys in what went into their decision making with their sons.
Thank you,
A baseball parent
