Just my opinion, a post should be deleted if it references a specific kid in a negative fashion...What was accomplished by deleting both of those 14u theads? (instead of just the posts by 1434343)
Point well taken, usually only the very negative posts are deleted but it was requested that since a kid's name was used that the entire posting be deleted.
As in the past when we have been asked by various people, ranging from coaches to parents, to players, we delete posts when necessary. Usually it is because someone was trying to intentionally hurt a kid. At other times it was because a someone was saying things unfairly (in the opinion of the person involved), about a particular coach. Still at other times it was due to language used against someone, whether it be religious or racial.
We don't make an attempt to decide what is derogatory. If a parent, coach or player feels that should come off, we take it off. So far there have been about 75 requests. Some of them are requested on the day of the posting. Those don't get much attention since they were only viewed by a few people prior to their disappearance. It is those posts that have been up for a while, and viewed by many, that get the most attention (via admin emails) after being deleted.
There is a fine balance between criticism and harsh negativity towards kids who play baseball. When someone posts about an individual's accomplishments the intent is not to brag, I would hope. The intention is to show what a kid was able to do. Whether it is the freshman starting for St. Dominics or Lindenhurst, Northport, or the homerun hit in a professional stadium by a travel player, these players deserve some type of recognition. This forum can get their names out so that all of us can know who they are.
Bashing will be there for the rest of their lives, there is no immediate need to start on them now. Get the names out there and let us all enjoy watching them play. In the end, the best of the best will reveal themselves by their on-field play.
Unlike Newsday, things are pretty tame here. Maybe the decision to remove every post was bad however whatever good intention the original post had, the outcome was not good.
I think the original posts were the "up and coming 14u pitchers" and "travel player goes yard at Ripken Stadium".
There are many good/great pitchers at the 14u level on many travel teams. Some of them choose to play 14u while others play 15u. The difference in competition between the 2 age groups is trivial. You can equate it to playing golf from the red tees. Given the chance, how many of you will shoot par? Your score will not differ much, if at all, from hitting from the white tees.
Hopefully the good pitchers at 14u have not reached their potential and will be around on signing day in 2010 for all of us to celebrate.
In the future, if it is your son or daughter (it was bad for the girls back in April), and you think that something is too harsh and unfair, a posting can be deleted if you request. If it is something very trivial, try to remember that it is a place for opinions.
