Hes is a young kid playing up, however he is a big strong kid with a lot of raw talent. In my very novice opinion I believe when he learns the game he will be a very solid player. I dont know if you are being sarcastic but I hope that clarifies it for you. BTW why dont you register so we know who you are?
no no not being sarcastic at all and was not even refering to the player you are talking about. I have heard players being discribed as having a good upside and i just was wondering what it ment exactly it seems to me to be very vague but used often and I just thought I would ask since you used it if you could explain what it means exactly does it mean they show potential? that is kind of what it sounds like to me. sorry i did not mean to insult you I really just wanted to know what it ment. thanks again

By saying Sesto has a tremendous upside chinmusic was probably referring to his raw tools and size. The kid is already 6'3 210, or close to it. As the old saying goes, you can't teach size. He can hit and hit with power. He throws gas on the mound. With a little command on his location he will improve alot. I'm not that sure of his speed but he is a big kid.
Yes, upside is overused sometimes but this particular kid has the things that cant be taught. Take someone else with his same power and arm strength in a 5'7" frame and you have a good player without such a tremendous upside.
ok so raw tools and size are part of what is refered to as upside, so the saying is used to describe a player who is still a work in progress and exhibits things that cant be taught like raw talent, size i guess speed would be another one.
It generally means that said pitcher has certain traits -- like size, athleticism, mechanics, fastball speed, etc. -- that indicate he has good potential to reach some of the higher levels of the game down the road.
For instance, say a 15 YO pitcher throws in the upper 70s with good mechanics and one or both parents are tall or have an athletic build. A college coach or pro scout might say he's got upside or good projectibility. It's simply an estimation of potential.
