Yes , speed kills but also remember that grades play a big role also.

Two equal players , one player with a 67 ave. vs a player with a 97 ave. You are signing the 97 scholar

and the 6.7 runner vs the 7.7 runner.

The 6.7 runner vs the 7.7 runner? Assume we are talking 60 yard dash times. 6.7 would be the low end of average speed. 7.7 would mean you better be a pitcher.

Major league average is 7.0
6.7 is really fast
6.5 is Jimmy Rollins speed
6.2 is the Upton brothers.

Below is what purports to be a standard evaluation chart used by professional scouts for major league prospects. This is not the same scale for high school and college players. On this chart 6.7 falls in the middle of Good speed.

60-Yard Dash

6.3 – 6.5 seconds – Exceptional speed

6.6 – 6.8 seconds - Good speed

6.9 – 7.0 seconds - Average speed

7.1 seconds or more - Below-average speed

u call it goodpseed. the poster and every one else all know that allof it is fast. splitting hairs here.

It may be splitting HARES but it isn't splitting HAIRS.

Every organization believes that speed is a vital aspect of a position players abilities and plays an essential role in the success of a team. The measurement of actual running speed varies among players and can be very deceptive. For example a short person usually takes more steps getting where he wants to go and therefore may give the illusion of a certain level of speed. In actuality, he may only be a fair runner because he is taking a lot more steps. On the other hand, the tall guy with long legs and long strides may not look that fast, but may get where he wants to go quicker. Therefore, MLB utilizes a stopwatch for measurement and comparison.

Scouts grade these players the following way:
60 yr dash
6.9-7.0 Average
6.7-6.8 Above Average
6.5-6.6 Good
6.4 and below Outstanding
I want to thank the previous poster for posting the 60 yd dash numbers. I know that my numbers are slightly different, but I am not one to slit hairs and too close to debate. I will be more than happy to post the home to first numbers for both left and right if anyone requests.

I want to thank everyone for their productive input and hopefully we educated a parent who was looking for guidance.

The original poster is correct in utilizing the term "good speed." That is the way it is defined on a Player Evaluation Sheet. I know it sounds stupid or wrong, but "it is what it is."

A lot of Scouts also look for Home to First times on routine ground balls. Bustin' it to First no matter what, it's all about hustle and attitude. The Boy's should always look as if there is know place they would rather be than inside that Diamond.

Timing a Hitter From Home to First Base
Besides a 60 yard dash time the alternative way to scout speed on the playing field is to time hitters from home to first base. The scout starts the stopwatch on "contact," or as the bat is hitting the ball; It is important to anticipate the swing to get an accurate time. Most scouts will click their watch as the ball is crossing home plate, whether the batter swings or not, in anticipation of contact. The scout then stops the watch as the hitter's foot touches first base, again anticipating the contact to stop the watch as accurately as possible. Since left-handed hitters are a step closer to first base, their times are graded a 10th of a second quicker.

Right Handed Hitter
--------------------------------------------------
Above Average - 4.2 secs
Average - 4.3 secs
Below Average - 4.4 secs
Very Below Average - 4.5 secs

Left Handed Hitter
--------------------------------------------------
Above Average - 4.1 secs
Average - 4.2 secs
Below Average - 4.3 secs
Very Below Average - 4.4 secs

Hey Bob Longo here, and I have heard enough about my program that you know what I just want to step in and set the record straight on a few things so at least when people read this they will have the other side of the story.

I will address the points that you bring up one by one and then you can make all the comments you want.

Also please note I am using my name not some clever screen name
so you know eactly who this is.

1- Mission of what we are trying to do is take kids that are all playing HS ball here on LI and want to get better at the game and prepare for HS and hopefully beyond. No where does it say on our site or in the talks we have with our players and parents that we "Promise" anything for college. What we do say is that are program is built like a college program and that our focus is to be prepared and do things that will get us to tournaments
as we feel that this is a path that other local and regional teams have done.

2- Original format was to be 12 - 13 players per team which is where we are with four teams and a fifth coming on line.

3- Turnover little history here, we started with one team oin 2005 and grew to nine thats nine in 2009, thats pretty good and we had in those four years almost zero turnover maybe 6 players per year all was good in NYO land. We deceide that since the teams were all doing well and that most of these kids wanted to do a little more and based on what many parents were looking for we changed the program to ramp it up to the next level and when we did that is when many felt this wasn't what they wanted both from a number of hours standpoint and cost. We are fine with that and wish them well and have had a few players look to get into our program as of late due to fact that what they are doing now isn't what the wanted either. We are all happy on this end.

4- The biggy cost - We have been training since November twice a week in a gym with three pro trainers, we have been working out since January and will continue until September two - three hours per week with baseball training all with pro instructors not Daddy coaches. Each team will be coached by a D1 or better paid coach with all of his expenses to and from all tournaments paid for. We have a running clinic done with Ed Lovelace which will take place in spring. Goggle him you see what this guy is all about. We also have 8 - 10 good high exposure tournaments on tap that again for the kids that have the goods they will be in right place.

we also will have a full web page for these players with all their infor with ability to upload pictures and video so if they do get a look it will be easy for the coaches to follow the kids.

If you think you can get all that done 110 plus hours with three instructors per hour, insurance, equipment, tournament fees, paid coaches, clinics and a fully supported

End Run- Just for those of you that need some more input we spoke with a number of D1 coaches when we put this toghter and had Pat Anderson at our intro meeting. I helped run the Paveco team with Gregg Sarra for five seasons and we traveld everywhere as well so I have been around,Perfect Game, Baseball Factory, Blue Chips, Diamond Nation, Under Armour, Cobb, NAFB, DR, and no less then a dozen states and I think I have learned a few things along the way.

I know The guys personally who run the Titans and the Ducks and other reginal organizations and these guys understand and welcome our program and have no problem with it and you know what there programs are priced around the same price point when its all said and done becasue this cost money to provide the level of service.

We started with one team in 2005 built to nine in four years. We start again with four - five this year and it will take time we built a good program first time around right, can we be given a chance to build this. Not one team organization including the Ducks and Titans come out of the gate signing 25 players and of you think thats the goal you have missed the point. We just want to take players in who want to perform to the very best of their ability and we put together a program that no matter what will make them better. How much who knows we don't have any magic pill just a program we feel address what a good player needs to be doing.

Last lets get this straight how many of you who are writting here run teams and have run teams that your sons were not a part of? Come on lines like that are just out there to make people upset. Yeah I get out of bed on weekends since my sones were 5 to rake fields with the LL and then my own organization for the fact that yeah my kids out there also. If thats a problem for someone or anyone then really who is missing the point. I do this becasue I enjoy it. We have 60 plus participants that are happy also. Give it some time and stop bashing me and my players it is getting old.
